Though he didn't have free rein of the world and gameplay was still 2D, this year offered Kirby an entirely new look. This was a notable achievement for the franchise as it was the first game to offer any 3D graphics - every game prior was two-dimensional. In 2000, developers released another game in the main saga: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Kirby could also finally run, swim, slide, and attack underwater. While inhaling enemies is one of his most well-known abilities, this next installment launched the now-classic ability to gain access to an enemy's special abilities by swallowing them. It took roughly 30 minutes to an hour to beat all five stages of the game, so a save feature wasn't necessary, but if someone was playing between classes or interrupted by parents, they had no option but to turn it off and start fresh another time.ฤก993's Kirby's Adventure, the next game in the series, introduced Kirby's famous copy ability. Unlike modern games, though common for the early gaming era, the game had no save feature. Players in Kirby's Dream Land earn points by defeating enemies, and points earn extra lives. Eating and floating weren't just pioneers for the Kirby franchise - they were new concepts in the world of side-scrolling games. Kirby can inhale an enemy and either spit it out and damage anything in his path, or swallow the enemy, effectively defeating them. Players can only move left, right, up, or down, and though Kirby can puff up and fly, he can't leave the screen. As a classic side-scrolling game, players must lead Kirby through to the end of the level, avoiding obstacles and defeating enemies. Despite its colorless nature, the game sold over five million copies, making it the best-selling Kirby game ever. Kirby's Dream Land, the game that started Kirby's journey, was released for the Game Boy in 1992. This naturally led to the concept of inhaling enemies, though the early version of this ability didn't allow Kirby to obtain his enemies' powers. Colleagues loved the idea that Kirby could puff up with air and float, so it was added to the game. Sakurai disliked when characters were powerful enough to sustain multiple blows but falling into a pit would defeat them, so he toyed with the idea of a floating hero. Kirby's abilities were initially more soccer-like, mostly kicking or headbutting, and his modern abilities of inhaling enemies and floating were not part of the plan.
